A Commission for Maggie by Sue King

Fused glass has many interior applications and I have worked on a wide variety ranging from small feature wall tiles and inset door panels to sculptures for a hotel. I finished a commission last year for a private client in Blackheath. The client and her husband had long thought about commissioning a piece of decorative glass to replace an ugly glass panel in their dining room. Sadly her husband passed away, and after some time she decided to pursue the project, in memory of her husband.

Initially, I visited Maggie's home to have a chat with her, and to look at the space, colours, and light and to find out what ideas she had for the panel. Following that meeting, I made some small sample glass colour strips using the colours I thought would be suitable, and also including colours Maggie liked. Maggie spent some time looking at these before deciding on her preferred colours. I then made a selection of watercolour sketches of design ideas, which also helped Maggie to decide on the composition. She selected her preferred design, and I then made up a scaled fused glass 'maquette' panel, that illustrated how the design and colours would work in the final piece. Maggie kept this sample for a few days so she could look at it at different times of day to see the effect of the changing light in the space. After she approved the design, I made up the final piece comprising three glass panels set into an oak framework. It was exciting, and slightly nerve-wracking for me, when I finally delivered the panel to Maggie. The piece worked really well in her dining room and Maggie was so pleased with the result, and has already had many admiring comments from her friends.
